Kraków is a fantastic starting point. Within one to two hours’ drive, you’ll find mountains, castles, mines, picturesque towns, and unspoiled nature. Here is our ranking of the best day trips worth adding to your student bucket list.

1. Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains

The capital of the Polish mountains is only 2 hours from Kraków by bus. Even if you are not an avid mountaineer, Krupówki, Gubałówka, and Morskie Oko are impressive in every season. A bus ticket costs around 20–30 PLN one way. Tip: go early in the morning to avoid crowds on the trails.

2. Wieliczka Salt Mine

A UNESCO-listed site, just 20 minutes from Kraków by suburban rail. Underground chambers, salt sculptures, and the Chapel of St. Kinga create an experience that stays with you. A reduced-fare ticket costs around 70 PLN — a one-time expense that is absolutely worth it.

3. Ojców National Park

The smallest national park in Poland, but one of the most beautiful. Jurassic rock formations, Hercules’ Club, Pieskowa Skała Castle, and charming valleys make it ideal for a spring or autumn trip. Getting there by minibus or car takes about 40 minutes.

4. Auschwitz-Birkenau

A visit to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum is a difficult but extremely important experience. The memorial is located in Oświęcim, about 70 km from Kraków. It is worth booking your visit online in advance — entry to the site is free, but reservation is required. This is a history lesson that no textbook can replace.

5. Wadowice

The hometown of Pope John Paul II, 50 km from Kraków. The Family Home Museum, the parish church, and of course the legendary kremówki make for a short but meaningful trip. Getting there by minibus takes just under an hour.

6. Bochnia – the Oldest Salt Mine in Poland

Less famous than Wieliczka, but just as fascinating — and definitely less crowded. An underground tourist route, a chapel, and even an underground multimedia exhibition. A reduced-fare ticket costs around 50–60 PLN, and the train ride takes about an hour.

7. Dunajec Castle in Niedzica

Picturesquely located on a rock above Lake Czorsztyn, the castle is an ideal destination for a summer trip. After sightseeing, it is worth renting a kayak or a bike to explore the area. The journey takes about 2 hours.

8. Kościeliska Valley

An alternative to Morskie Oko — an easier trail, beautiful views, and rock caves. Travel by bus to Zakopane, then take a minibus or walk from there.

9. Kalwaria Zebrzydowska

A UNESCO monastic complex. Baroque architecture, a pilgrimage park, and views of the Beskids. The journey takes about an hour by bus.

10. Dunajec Rafting

A rafting trip through the Dunajec Gorge on rafts, with views of the Three Crowns massif. Season: May–September, ticket 75–90 PLN, and getting to Sromowce takes about 2 hours.

How to plan and save money?

Organize trips in groups — sharing transport costs significantly lowers the price. Use reduced-fare tickets with your student ID. Check bus and train timetables on e-podroznik.pl and FlixBus. Many places offer free admission on selected days — it is worth checking in advance.
