Studies are a marathon, not a sprint – and that applies not only to learning, but also to physical fitness. Sitting over books and a laptop for several hours a day takes its toll. Fortunately, Krakow offers plenty of opportunities to spend time actively, often at prices perfectly suited to a student budget.
Why is sport so important during studies?
Regular physical activity improves concentration, reduces stress and helps you sleep better – and those are three things every student needs. Even 30 minutes of movement a day translates into better academic results. You do not have to train like a professional – it is enough to find a form of activity that you enjoy.
Gyms with student discounts
Krakow has a wide range of gyms. CityFit and PureGym offer memberships from as little as 59-79 PLN per month, and students can often count on additional discounts. The gyms operate in a 24/7 model, which means you can work out at any time – ideal for people with irregular class schedules.
Benefit Systems (MultiSport) is another option – if you work even part-time, your employer may partially fund a card that gives access to hundreds of sports facilities in the city.
AZS – the Academic Sports Association – organizes sports activities at universities. From basketball to yoga, the offer is broad, and the prices are symbolic or even free for students of a given university.
Swimming pools and baths
AGH Swimming Pool on Buszka Street is the most popular pool among students – a 50-meter pool, affordable prices and a location in the heart of academic Krakow. A student ticket costs around 10-12 PLN per hour.
Krakow Water Park on Dobrego Pasterza Street is a complex with sports and recreational pools, saunas and slides. Great for weekend relaxation – student tickets are clearly cheaper.
Running – a free activity in beautiful scenery
Krakow is a runner’s paradise. Vistula Boulevards are the most popular route – flat, well lit and with a view of Wawel. The route is about 8 km round trip and is perfect both for a morning jog and an evening run after classes.
Krakow Meadows are a huge green space in the city center – one lap around the Meadows is an ideal 4-5 km. In spring and autumn, hundreds of Krakow residents run here.
Bednarski Park and Wolski Forest offer more demanding routes – hills and forest paths for those looking for contact with nature without leaving the city.
Team sports and student clubs
Krakow’s universities have extensive sports sections. At the Jagiellonian University, AGH and Krakow University of Technology, there are clubs for football, volleyball, basketball, tennis and many other disciplines. Training sessions are regular, and inter-university competition adds motivation. Sign-ups usually take place at the beginning of the academic year.
Yoga, cycling and more
Yoga studios with student discounts offer classes from 25 PLN – many with an offer of “first class free”. A city bike, on the other hand, combines transport and cardio training, and Krakow’s cycling infrastructure is getting better and better.
Summary
In Krakow, there is no excuse not to be active. Gyms, swimming pools, parks, running routes and sports clubs – the offer is huge, and the prices are student-friendly. Find your form of movement and fit it into your weekly schedule – your body and mind will thank you during exam session.
