Eating out every day is the fastest way to an empty wallet. On the other hand, not every student is a born cook, and a dormitory kitchen is not a fully equipped restaurant. The good news? A few simple recipes, a bit of organization, and a little willingness are enough to eat tasty, healthy, and cheaply.
Why is it worth cooking for yourself?
Simple math: lunch at a milk bar or fast food place costs 15-25 PLN. By cooking at home, you can prepare a full meal for 5-10 PLN. With 30 lunches a month, the difference can be as much as 450 PLN – enough to pay for your phone, transport, and still go to a concert.
Meal prep – your best friend
Cook once, eat for three days – that is the idea behind meal prep. On Sunday, prepare a larger portion of rice, groats, or pasta, bake chicken or tofu, and slice vegetables for salads. Divide everything into containers and you have lunches for half the week. At Next Door, the shared kitchen is fully equipped, which makes meal prep even easier.
5-minute breakfasts
Oatmeal with banana and honey. Pour milk or boiling water over the oats, add sliced banana, a teaspoon of honey, and a pinch of cinnamon. Ready in 3 minutes, filling until lunch. Cost: about 2 PLN.
Toasts with egg and avocado. Two slices of wholegrain bread, a fried egg, half an avocado, and a little salt and pepper. Simple, nourishing, Instagram-worthy. Cost: about 5 PLN.
Yogurt with granola and fruit. Natural yogurt, a handful of granola, seasonal fruit – a ready-made breakfast without cooking. Cost: about 4 PLN.
Lunches anyone can make
Pasta aglio e olio. Cook the pasta al dente, then sauté garlic in olive oil with chili flakes in a pan. Mix together. Add chopped parsley. Ready in 15 minutes. Cost: about 4 PLN.
Vegetable stir-fry with rice. Chop peppers, zucchini, and carrots. Fry them in a pan with soy sauce and a little ginger. Serve with rice. Add chicken or tofu for protein. Time: 20 minutes, cost: 8-10 PLN for two servings.
Pumpkin cream soup. Chop the pumpkin, onion, and potato. Cook until soft, then blend with a hand blender. Add salt, pepper, and a little cream. A soup made from one pumpkin is lunch for three days. Cost: about 3 PLN per serving.
Quick dinners
Wrap with hummus and vegetables. Tortilla, hummus, lettuce, tomato, cucumber – roll it up and eat. No cooking, full of flavor. Cost: about 5 PLN.
Tuna salad. A can of tuna, corn, red onion, olive oil, lettuce. Mix in a bowl, ready in 5 minutes. Cost: about 7 PLN.
Smart shopping
Buy seasonal fruits and vegetables at the market – they are cheaper and tastier than in the supermarket. Make a shopping list and stick to it – impulse buys in the store are the enemy of your budget. Dry products – rice, pasta, oats, canned goods – should be bought in larger packages, as they cost significantly less per serving.
Summary
Cooking in a dormitory does not require culinary talent or expensive ingredients. A few tried-and-tested recipes, a bit of planning, and a willingness to experiment are enough. In time, you will discover that cooking is not a chore, but a relaxing ritual – and one of the best ways to save money during your studies.
